Frequently Asked Questions
How many estate agents are there in the UK?
EstateRank's directory lists 5,250 estate and letting agency branches across the UK and Northern Ireland, including 4,659 in England, 258 in Scotland, 226 in Wales and 101 in Northern Ireland. 3,771 of them offer lettings, and many offer both sales and lettings. This is the count of branches in our directory rather than an official census, so the true UK total is likely to be higher.
How do I find the best estate agent in my area?
Search your town or postcode on EstateRank to see the agents covering it, then compare them on professional memberships (such as Propertymark), the property portals they advertise on, and whether they handle sales, lettings or both. Check recent sold prices on your street so you can judge their valuations, invite two or three agents to value your home, and confirm that each belongs to a government-approved redress scheme, which every UK estate agent must.
How does EstateRank rank estate agents?
Agents are ordered by a profile score from 0 to 130 built from their professional memberships, the property portals they list on, whether they offer both sales and lettings, and how complete their contact details are. Premium (paid) listings receive a boost, which we disclose. The score does not measure sales results or customer reviews.
Where does EstateRank get its sold house prices from?
Sold prices come from HM Land Registry Price Paid Data, published under the Open Government Licence. It records residential sales in England and Wales; sales in Scotland and Northern Ireland are registered elsewhere and are not included.
Is EstateRank free to use?
Yes. Searching the agent directory, viewing sold prices and using the valuation, stamp duty and yield calculators is free. Agencies can pay for a premium listing, which is labelled on the site.
